Jacob Titus Bowne Papers Box List Box List Created on: 8/26/11 Box List Updated on: Extent: 8 boxes Arrangement Notes: No overall arrangement is inherent in collection. Letters were originally arranged chronologically and then alphabetically within the collection. This arrangement has been kept as closely as possible. Other materials had no arrangement. Note: There are many gaps in the letters. Letters were put into folders over a number of years, by different people. It is not known whether or not these “gaps” are somewhere within other letter collections. In particular letters within the processed “Secretarial Department Records” should be checked. Provenance Note: Overall provenance is not known, as the overall collection has been gathered from various sources. Where the provenance is known, it is listed below. Letters starting in box 2, and the bound letters from Jacob Bowne from May 1887 to March 1888, came out of letter boxes and were labeled merely with date on the outside and were not attributed to any department or to Bowne. At some point, someone indicated that they came from Bowne. It is not known who made this assumption. Most likely it was from the fact that most letters seem to be directed to Bowne or written by him. It is most likely that these letters came from some office at the school that Bowne headed. Whether these letters remain with the rest of the Bowne collection or whether they should go into departmental records is not known at this point. Some of the materials in Box 1 were previously cataloged and in the library collection. These include, but may not be limited to, Early American Men’s Societies Book, The First Decade of the Training School, Classified Bibliography of Boy Life and Organized Work with Boys, Jacob Titus Bowne written by Ballantine, Librarian’s Reports, preparation for the General Secretaryship, and Religious Societies of Young Men in New England in the 17th and 18th Century Box 1 of 8 • Collection Information • Misc Information – Library perspective • Misc In formation – YMCA Tribute • Photographs • Life Work Assembly (Z08-285) • Religious Societies of Young Men in New England in 17th and 18th Centuries • Preparation for the General Secretaryship of the YMCA • Librarian’s Reports • “Jacob Titus Bowne” & misc materials about pamphlet including picture • “Classified Bibliography of Boy life and organized work with Boys” • “Mather Societies of Young Men in N.E. 1677-1848” • bound letters from Jacob Bowne from May 1887 to March 1888 Box 2 of 8 • Correspondence 1885-1891(9 folders) – mostly admissions inquiries Box 3 of 8 • Correspondence 1891-94 C through D (9 folders) Box 4 of 8 • Correspondence 1891-98 C through D (9 folders) Box 5 of 8 • Correspondence 1892-97 E through G (8 folders) Box 6 of 8 • Correspondence 1895-97 (?) - mostly – may follow box 5, though – M (6 Folders) Box 7 of 8 • Correspondence 1892-97 R Through S (6 Folders) Box 8 of 8 • Correspondence 1892-97 W through Z (7 Folders)
