Series 2 Scope and Contents

The series has documents from Friermood’s undergraduate work, publications from the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), and documents about African American and Jewish membership at Young Men’s Christian Associations (YMCA). Particularly, these documents relate to the National Council of YMCAs’ Assemblies Interracial Action Planning Workshop, held at the Leaning Tower YMCA in Chicago from January 12-14, 1968. Among these documents are two pamphlets: “Winning the Race: News and Photos from our Gallery of Progress” (1965) by the National Board of YMCAs and “A Time to Listen . . . A Time to Act” (1967) by the United States Commission on Civil Rights. Of interest is a fact-finding inquiry form issued sometime during 1967 by the National YMCA Physical Education Committee on behalf of their National Emergency Physical Education Program (Box 13, Folder 2). Although this collection does not have the individual replies from the sixty-six YMCAs that participated, there are summaries of the data that break down the racial diversity (or lack thereof) of YMCA members. The Antioch Notes is the alumni magazine from Antioch University, a private university that was established in 1852 in the United States. This issues contained here are from volume 25 (number 3), volume 27 (number 1-3, 5, 6, 9), and volume 28 (number 1-9), and they range from November 1947 to May 1951. The Youth Leaders Digest issues are from March 1958, December 1958, January 1959, June-September 1959, February1960, March 1960, and January 1967. This series also has Athletic Purchasing and Facilities (vol. 3, no. 7; August 1979), which features an article by Friermood called “How Volleyball Became the Game It Is Today.” “Palissy the Potter,” of unknown author and publication date, is a biography of the Bernard Palissy, a 16th century French Huguenot potter, hydraulics engineer, and craftsman, famous for having struggled for sixteen years to imitate Chinese porcelain.
