Series 01: Athletics and Health, 1871-1904
Series 01 Scope and Content
The series provides an overview of Blaikie’s interest in athletics, health and physical education. Included in this series are publications, newspaper articles, correspondence, notes, photographs, and scrapbooks. The bulk of the series is the collection of correspondence from people regarding his book How to Get Strong and How to Stay So. Blaikie’s interest in crew is documented through his collection of newspaper clippings and the correspondence between Harvard Crew and other organizations regarding regattas and crew teams. Robert Roberts and others sent to Blaikie the photographs in this series, which depict men flexing their muscles following Blaikie’s advice. There are also letters from Robert Roberts, the man who coined the phrase “Body Building” and who was the gymnasium supervisor along with Luther Halsey Gulick at the Springfield College, then The School for Christian Workers” from 1887-1889. The scrapbooks are titled How to Get Strong and Stay So, Education and Health, Rowing, and the Oarsman Manual.
