Scrapbook #1 Scope and Contents

Scrapbook #1: Photograph album presented to Mama holds pictures of Leslie Mann and his family, and places they, or he alone, traveled to (Washington, D.C., Boston, MA, Seattle). The Scrapbook is black with a hard canvas cover and thick, black paper pages. "Photographs" is written on the front cover. At the beginning of the scrapbook is a written message from Leslie Mann and his wife (Jessie), gifting the photograph scrapbook to his mother for her birthday on August 31st, 1914. The measage reads, "Presented to Mama on her Birthday, August 31, 1914. May this book bring foond recollections of the days bone by and express our love. Wishing you many, may years of love, health and happiness. Jessie and Leslie." The photographs seem to span from March to August of 1914. They are labeled in cursive with the date it was taken, where it was taken, and who is in the photograph. Where writing is hard to read on the photograph someone has placed a post-it note with the text rewritten.

Scrapbook #2 Scope and Contents

Scrapbook #2 has been unbound from its original binder and broken down into folders. Most of the scrapbook was loose within the original binder. The scrapbook contains a program for the Baseball Tournament at the New England States Championship Eastern States Exposition in 1931, newspaper and magazine articles about Leslie Mann's baseball career and work for the U.S.A. Olympic Team and U.S.O. in baseball from between 1917-1945 (one article is in Spanish), a transcript of an interview with Frank Bull, Bill Schroeder, and Leslie Mann, and more newspaper articles about Mann's work as a baseball scout and his legacy from ca. 1949-1959. There are also photographs of Leslie Mann with his family, with members of the International Amateur Baseball Federation (I.A.B.F.), with members of the St. Louis Cardinals (when he was on the team 1920-1923), with members of the Chicago Cubs (when he was on the team 1916-1919), with members of the Boston Braves (when he was back on the team in 1919-1920), individual baseball players press photographs, a 1945 U.S.O. conference, and the 1936 Olympic baseball team. Finally, the scrapbook contains Les Mann's resume from ca. 1946, his Camp Logan pass from World War I, articles written by Mann on the Amateur Baseball Association, and a copy of the January 1927 "The Athletic Journal". These materials are thought to have been created between 1916-1946.

Scrapbook #2 Processing Notes

Scrapbook #2 has been taken apart and the materials within the scrapbook have been placed into folders. This was partly due to the fact that most of the materials contained in this scrapbook were loose in the front and back of the binder that held the materials. Therefore the binder held very little materials and once emptied of the loose materials, took up a far amount of space. To conserve space and make things easier for the researcher it was decided that folders would work best.

Loose materials had no discernable order. Therefore, materials were placed into folders by type or subject at the discretion of the processor.

Only the cover of the original binder that held the materials was kept. This was due to the fact that it had a title written on it. The title written on the cover is, "L. Mann WWII USO Baseball & Int'L Baseball & Misc". This title was not used for the title of the scrapbook. Cover can be found in Box 3, Folder 26.

Materials that were still held in the binder are in their original order. Where processor felt that having the materials kept separate would help their access, materials were kept in their own folder. Therefore the original order spans four folders. This includes folders 27, 28, 29, & 30 in box 3.
