This series has photographs of Springfield College gymnasts performing individually, posing with their teams, forming Tableaux, and competing in championships hosted by the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League (EIGL), the Division for Girls’ and Women’s Sports (DGWS) and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The photographs show a wide range of activities, such as standing at the winner’s podiums, performing at the Home Shows and Exhibition Shows, juggling, doing a triple balance, participating in team drills, dressed as clowns, and building a pyramid. There are also undated photographs of the coaches and team captains. The vast majority of pictures show male gymnasts, some of whom are identified. In the photographs taken at gymnastics championships, the students at the winner’s podiums represent numerous other schools besides Springfield College: University of Pennsylvania, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Princeton, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Military Academy, Temple, Pennsylvania State University, Syracuse, and Southern Connecticut State University. Many of the Tableaux photographs were taken by George Woodruff, a sports photojournalist. Of additional interest, there are photographs from the Springfield College Exhibition Team’s winter 1925 trip to Mexico City, the team’s performance at the New York World’s Fair, and the summer 1966 trip to Florida.
