Series 02 Scope and Contents

This series contains documents relating to the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams at Springfield College, as well as documents concerning the New England Gymnastics Clinic. Some of these documents relate to the Exhibition Team. The documents include competition scores, rosters, sports schedules, brochures, gymnastic equipment, trophies, Gymmie Finals publications, National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Official Statistics and Awards, a season preview, ECAC receipts, statistics, and handwritten notes by Frank Wolcott. Some have information about Springfield College’s annual athletic awards. The newspaper clippings primarily describe Springfield College gymnastic competitions, alumni, coaches, and occasionally the school’s other athletic teams (bulk: 1960-1975). A few folders are dedicated to special Exhibition Team trips (such as to Florida, Mexico, and Puerto Rico), and they often include rosters, budget, notes, and letters. There are papers, brochures, letters from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League (EIGL) Championships. This sub-series also has a 1955 Trophy celebrating Springfield College’s return to collegiate gymnastics competition, as well as gymnastics equipment. There is a report from the First Annual New England Collegiate Invitational Gymnastics Championship at Lowell Technical Institute (1968) and Pan-America Competition Exercises (1971). This subseries also includes documents from the New England Federation Gymnastics Clinic, mostly from between 1963 and 1980, including a hand-written history by Wolcott and a 1963 Instructor ribbon. This sub-series also contains a few copies of newspaper articles about a controversy between the Civic Center and the New England Gymnastics Clinic.

Arrangement

The newspaper clippings were originally organized by year but not month or day; they were left in this order. Within the newspaper articles was a single photograph showing the back of a man walking toward a building in Asia—this was transferred to the Personal series. Articles that were not about gymnastics were relocated to the miscellaneous series. The magazines were left as originally arranged. Springfield College brochures (1964-1990) were taken out of this collection and either added to the Springfield College Gymnastics Collection or, if duplicate, discarded. The New England Gymnastics Clinic materials had no order and were arranged by year. The letters were organized by date.
