Series 03 Scope and Contents

From the Series:

This series contains publications and advertisements on theater performances, Jacob’s Pillow, and various schools associated with Ted Shawn and Jacob’s Pillow, as well as books of Sheet Music and Dance notation in Labanotation style. Of particular importance are programs and brochures for the schools of dance created and hosted at Jacob’s Pillow, including Ted Shawn’s the School of Dance for Men and the University of Dance, a joint venture between Springfield College, Ted Shawn and Jacob’s Pillow. The programs, brochures, flyers, and advertisements on performances include programs from the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festivals (1964-2016), flyers of performances by Ted Shawn and his dancers presented by Springfield College, including one held on March 11, 1933 (one of the first performances he did using the dance routines he created for his Men Dancers), and a program from the famous series of performances that he and his Men Dancers conducted at the Boston Repertory Theater in March of 1933. There are some materials used in teaching dance, including sheet music and Labanotation of dances such as 16 dances in 16 rhythms that Ted Shawn developed to teach. It should be noted that many of the programs give information about the men that danced in his All Men Dancers troop, like Barton Mumaw and Jack Cole, and many of the Dancers and Dance Companies that performed at Jacob’s Pillow.
