Series 01 Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Series 1 contains photographs, newspaper articles, slides, videos, old building meeting minutes, floor plans, and various memos, letters, and general information on the ventilation and pumping systems used in the building. Photographs take up the vast majority of the collection, including photographs of all the parts of the building. Interior shots and exterior shots from various time periods are included. Two documents on the workings and innovations in the ventilation system in the new West Gymnasium also warrant special consideration, these include “Text and Description of Heating and Ventilating Plant that the International YMCA Training School” and “Ventilation Studies at the International YMCA College, Springfield Mass.”

The collection also contains materials from the various dedications that have taken place over the buildings’ long life. These materials include dedication materials from the original opening in 1894, the 1910 laying of the West Gymnasium cornerstone (For Time Capsule materials, see Series 2: Time Capsule), dedication information on both the West Gymnasium and McCurdy Natatorium, the renaming of the West Gymnasium to the Ruth Evans Gymnasium in 1998, the recent Ribbon cutting on the newly renovated Judd Gymnasia in 2010 and the materials on the Stitzer YMCA naming and dedication held in the Spring of 2011, and the renaming of East Gymnasium to the Harold C. Smith Room in the Spring of 2012. Of particular note are some old newspaper articles from 1894 and 1910 on the school and the construction of the building and some copies of some of the speeches given at these functions. There are some items taken from rooms in the building are included in the collection, including a small framed block of floor boards from the old 1910 West Gymnasium and a group of seven name tags of professors (Edward Hickox, Erastus Pennock, James Huff McCurdy, John Rothacher, Harold DeGroat, George Affleck, and Leslie Judd) that, “….came out of a bathroom on first floor (middle of the hall) of Judd Gymnasia that was used by 3 or 4 faculty Offices that were adjacent to bathroom. Above the name tags were clothes hooks ... those "SC Greats" didn't even have lockers so they hung their clothes on those hooks and back then clothes were changed from street wear, to teaching uniforms, to coaching uniforms, to classroom or street clothes.” (Mimi Murray, Dec. 2014). Both were removed during the 2010 Judd Gymnasia Renovations. It is not known whether the flooring was the original flooring installed in 1910.

Finally, there are two large architect models & a set of Bid set drawings (dated December 18, 2009) created by the Architectural firm Stephen Jablonski Architects of the 2010 renovations of Judd Gymnasia and the design for the Springfield College Museum at Judd Gymnasia. One is of Judd Gymnasia with surrounding landscaping, on a heavy cardboard base measuring 26” x 34.” The model is made out of a heavy cardboard that appears to be hand colored. Some of the pieces are removable so you can look inside. There are numbers and letters on some of the windows and sections that may have been used by the architect to explain certain features. Landscaping includes bushes and proposed pathways. The other model is of the Springfield College Museum at Judd Gymnasia only. Included are McCurdy Natatorium and the first floor of the tower section of Judd Gymnasia. It is on a heavy cardboard base measuring 48” x 15.” Model is made out of thick matte board. Tower section is open, but McCurdy Natatorium has a removable roof so that you can see into the museum. There are examples of proposed murals both glued and clipped to walls (some might be missing from the original model as there are many blank areas where murals were originally placed).
