This series contains newspaper articles, correspondence, and a report presented to Springfield, Massachusetts Planning Board on when the Lake Massasoit Dam broke in1956. The bulk of the series is made up of newspaper articles about the dam burst and the struggle to get the dam fixed and the lake levels restored. Most articles are dated. Most seem to be from local newspapers. Correspondence is mostly from and to the committee for the preservation of watershops pond, specifically Frederick S. Pillsbury. There are many letters sent back and forth between Pillsbury and the office of Senator John F. Kennedy, including one letter signed by John F. Kennedy. There is also Springfield College correspondence by President Donald C. Stone to and from Alumni and Staff. Within these documents are updates and descriptions of the situation with the dam, including the official congressional document from the Hearings on the Dam Repairs conducted by the U.S. Congress on March 29, 1956. Finally, there is a document with “tipped in” photographs of lake Massasoit that was created by the Springfield, Massachusetts Planning Board on March 6, 1956. It is tilted “Save Watershops Pond Because.” It contains both text describing the situation, the benefits of the Watershops Pond, and photographs of the pond showing the lowered water level.
