Correspondence, 1968-1985
Series 01 Scope and Contents
This series contains newspaper articles, correspondence, memos, reports, notes and flyers that talk about the history of Lake Massasoit as well as talking about some of the major events during its history. Of particular interest is a newspaper article titled “History of Watershops Pond” appearing in the January 1983 Family Journal. There is also a newspaper article that contains some pictures and a copy of the original government deed signed by Jefferson Davis from the January 11,1914 Springfield Republican. Another document on the history of Lake Massasoit is a cassette tape of a lecture given by Richard C. Garvey, local newsman and author of a “Springfield College Family Album: Notes and Scenes from our First Century,” that gives a nice overview of the history of the lake with a slant towards Springfield College’s involvement in that history. Also of interest are materials from the “Clean-up Binder” that held information on various clean-ups of Lake Massasoit. It is not known who created or used this binder of materials, but it includes some of the meeting minutes from the first meetings of the Lake Massasoit Association in 1980 and materials on the Clean-up conducted in 1986. Finally there is a folder of materials, including a flyer and the official notification ,of the “draw down” or clean-up of Lake Massasoit that occurred in 1996.
