Series 03 Scope an Contents

From the Series:

This series contains correspondence, speech scripts, memos, news articles, reports, and videos on the proposed Lake Massasoit Restoration project first proposed in 1990 and its results. Included within are printed slide pages and a report that was given to the APWA (American Public Works Association) by the LEA Group, Inc. in association with the Marine Systems Laboratory on May 4, 1990. This document outlines the problems and the basic goals in the proposed Lake Massasoit Restoration Project. There are also two copies of remarks made by Springfield College President, Frank S. Falcone, during a November 5, 1990 Press Conference on the Lake project. Of particular interest is an “update” packet that was put together on February 2, 1993. It includes updates on the results of the restoration plan, as well as the original information about the project. Finally there are a group of videos used for a TV program on the Lake Massasoit Restoration Project. A full description is given below:

There are a total of twenty-eight beta video tapes and six VHS tapes. According to documentation included with the tapes, the footage was shot for the documentary titled “The Lost River: the Story of the Mill River” (1993). Most of the information on the tapes comes from a note from Claudia A. Elferdink, one of the producers of the documentary, dated January 19, 1994. Included within are:

“The Lost River: the Story of the Mill River” VHS tape (Box 6) – A VHS recording of the documentary.

5 VHS Tapes (Box 5) listed as “Lake Massasoit Dub” – These appear to be a composite of the collected footage from the 20 “Lake Massasoit” Beta Tapes. The tapes have scenic nature footage and footage of the artificial wetland and lake reclamation project undertaken by a group of Springfield College seniors who were Environmental Health and Technology majors. A more detailed description of the tapes is available within the collection.

20 Beta Tapes (Box 4 & 5) labeled “Lake Massasoit” – They contain raw footage from the documentary “The Lost River: The Story of the Mill River” (1993). Only some of the video tapes were watched during processing. Tapes watched showed that they contained footage taken primarily in 1991, and show oil on the lake surface, trash, wildlife, winter nature scenes, Springfield Colleges students taking water samples, and people fishing. A more detailed description of watched tapes is available in folder as well as a basic listing within note from Claudia Elferdink.

8 Beta Tapes (Box 6) labeled “Arcata” – They show interviews taken in Arcata, California with professors and professionals in wastewater management. Only some of these videos were watched during processing. Names of interviewers from tapes watched (notes within folder): include, David Hull, George Hallen, Frank Klapp, Steven C. Tyler , and Robert Gearheart. There is no mention of Arcata, California in “The Lost River: The Story of Mill River”; it’s possible that the footage is from a documentary called “Where Waste Water is not Wasted Water: the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary,” but this has not been confirmed. A more detailed description of watched tapes is contained in document in folder.
