Processing Information

Materials in Series 3: Correspondencecame in three “Folders”. The titles of these folders, their original order, and all contents of these folders were maintained in the processing of these materials. No documents were added to these materials.

Original order of the folders was essentially date order. Date order was determined either by date received in the Office of the President or, when there was one, date letter in response was sent. This order was maintained as much as possible, with order being kept by date letter in response was given, though letters filed by date received were moved to date letter was written, since some letters came to the office well after they were sent.

Letters with responses were stapled together, with response on top. These groupings of letters and attached materials were kept together, though the staples were removed and the original letter placed first.

All letters in these groupingsare paper clipped together. Letters were in divided up into folders in groups of 20 to make it easier for students and researchers to use and for the materials to be digitized. The letters have been numbered to facilitate tracking. Order should be kept.
