Subseries 01a Scope and Contents

Sub-series a: Miscellaneous Materials contains unpublished manuscripts, correspondence, schedules and official team documents, news releases, news articles, statistics and scoring documents, newsletters, posters, pamphlets, drawings, clothing, and other memorabilia that talks about both the men’s and women’s gymnastics team. The materials range from the 1950s through the early 2000s. The bulk of materials are from the late 1960s to the 1980s. These materials talk about both men’s and women’s teams and are unable to be separated without damaging the integrity of the documents.

There are published and unpublished manuscripts in the collection, including the Springfield College gymnastics history titled “Joy of Effort” that tells the tale of the gymnastics team up to its publication around 1971. Of import is a copy of the published manuscript “Roots of Gymnastics, 3rd edition” written by International Gymnastics Hall of Fame curator, A. Bruce Frederick, and dated 2006. In addition, there are pages from this manuscript particularly on Springfield College Gymnastics History (some signed by A. Bruce Frederick). These pages chart Springfield College contributions to Gymnastics History beginning with Naismith and Stagg going through Leslie Judd, Frank Wolcott, Mimi Murray, Stephen Posner and Cheryl Raymond. Finally, there is an unpublished manuscript by Matthew Davis titled “The Road to Excellence: The History of SC Gymnastics” published ca. 2008. There are materials that contain rosters, schedules and records on both the Women’s and men’s teams. This includes some Springfield College team brochures during the eighties that contain information on both teams, lists of gymnasts through 1972, news releases and news articles from the 1960s trough 1990s, and a series of manuscripts on the mid-1960s that contain information on the season, news reports, and records. There are materials from NCAA, USA Gymnastics, and USGF (United States Gymnastics Federation) Championships for both men and women that the teams both participated in and Springfield College hosted, beginning in the early ‘80s and continuing through 2010, including scoring sheets, statistics, correspondence, manuals, posters, and other information regarding the championships. There may be more materials on these championships in both the Men’s and Women’s materials.

There are also posters, drawings, plaques, and various memorabilia. This includes pins with Gymnasts on them and posters from some of the Championships. Of note is a poster titled ‘College Gymnasts: Here’s one way to “Keep Fit”’. It is tentatively dated ca. 1959-1963 due to gymnasts identified in the poster. The posters show male and women gymnasts from Springfield College performing. There is some text on poster and the photographs were taken by J. Walter Green.
