Series 02 Scope and Contents

Series 2: Men’s Team Materials contains published and unpublished manuscripts; correspondence, schedules, rosters, match results, scoring materials, and other official team documents; news releases, news articles, and newsletters that talk about happenings of the team; and posters, drawings, clothing, and other memorabilia that refers to/and were used by the Springfield College men’s gymnastics team; brochures, programs, schedules and rosters from matches, dual meets and tournaments; photographic prints, slides, negatives, and contact sheets, including team photographs, individual gymnasts, coaches, and action shots (both staged and not-staged) taken from meets and practices; and 16mm films and VHS video tapes of individual performances and competition films. These materials and the information they contain go all the way back to the start of the program in 1904 and continue through the 2000s. The bulk of the material falls from 1960 through 2015. Brochures and Programs go back only until 1956, other programs are in series 4; Homeshow/Exhibition.

Statistics and individual/team match scores or results make up the majority of materials within this series. These include packets of scores for the gymnasts & teams who participated in major championship matches such as the EIGL (Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League), NCAA, USAG (USA Gymnastics), New England Championships, and ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference). There are also many Programs and Brochures for these championships and multiple team meets. The most prevalent is for the E.I.G.L. or the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League Championships where there exist brochures from the 1963-64 school year through 2008-2009 school year (there are gaps).

There are materials that talk about the history of the Springfield College Gymnastics Team, including a thesis written in 1922 by Arthur F. Schaefer on the Springfield College Gymnastics Team and some letters and materials written by Gymnastics Head Coach Frank Wolcott. Other documentary information includes photographic prints and slides of team photographs, individual gymnasts, coaches, and action shots (both staged and not-staged) taken from meets and practices from approximately the start of the program in 1904 through the present. Of interest, may be some photographs of Tim Daggett, 1984 Gold Medalist from Springfield, Massachusetts. There are also some16mm films and VHS video tapes. The early films center around individual performances on different apparatus and tableaux performances. Most of the VHS tapes contain films from championship competitions beginning in the early 1970s through the late 1980s.
