Series 08 Scope and Contents

This series contains photographs that were collected by Springfield College at the request of Lawrence Doggett from alumni who served in the military or as YMCA secretaries during World War One. (See verso of Fred Platt’s letter in Box 5, Series 4, sub-series 4b, folder 2 of 2.) There are five scrapbooks covering the years 1887-1912, 1913-1916, 1917, 1918-1920 and 1920-1921. The last of these also has a loose folder of photos which belong among the scrapbooks in this series and letters documenting them which belong in Box 5, Series 4, sub-series 4b folders 1-3. Three items of note in this series are a ribbon included with Captain F. G. Armitage (picture 114) from his Military Cross for conduct during the battle of Amiens, second, A. B. Schilling, (picture 258) with trophies, a picture is included of war plunder with pull down list, which has been lifted off of the page and put into Mylar in order to prevent tearing along the creases and lastly a photography of Dr. James Naismith, creator of basketball, in military uniform.
