Series 1 Scope and Contents

Materials within Series 1: Personal Papers and Memorabilia include bills, identity and selective service cards, tickets and ticket stubs, photographs, cassette tapes, and memorabilia. Materials mainly date from the time that Eliott Baker attended Springfield College, ca. 1970-1976 and were used, created or acquired while a student at Springfield College.

Within the collection are some official documents belonging to Eliott Baker, including a Springfield College identification card, food service card, locker in Beveridge Center card, Bachelor’s and Master’s diplomas, and his Selective Service cards. In addition, there are Eliott Baker’s undergraduate and graduate bills to attend Springfield College. Of note are concert tickets and ticket stubs of concerts attended by Eliott Baker. There is also a packet created by the Springfield College Career Planning and Placement Service containing Eliott's grades and professor/employer reviews that was sent to Old Dominion College for their consideration for their review. Full concert tickets include two concerts held at Springfield College, including Bruce Springsteen and the Persuasions concert held on February 2, 1974 and Sha Na Na and the Flying Burrito Bros. concert held on November 6, 1971. Both concerts were held on the campus of Springfield College. Other ticket stubs include Jethro Tull and the Who. Most of these concerts were held in Springfield Massachusetts, but a few were in Boston. Of particular note is a picture of Eliott Baker introducing Bruce Springsteen in Memorial Fieldhouse, and pictures he took of Alice Cooper and Edgar Winters performing in the Springfield Civic Center on October 29, 1972.

There are two Scrapbooks within this series of materials purchased and collected by Eliott Baker concerning the commemorative stamps celebrating the 100th anniversary birth of Dr. James Naismith issued on November 6, 1961 andcommemorating the 100th anniversary of the creation of basketball, issued August 28, 1991. Along with containing over a 100 postal cachets, there are postcards of the Basketball Hall of Fame, realia and print materials on the birth of basketball and Dr. James Naismith, and some materials on the history of basketball.

In addition, there are two tapes from a radio show that Eliott Baker hosted on the Springfield College Radio station, WSCB. Both shows are thought to have been taped in 1973. The shows consist mainly of music, though there are a few instances where Eliott Baker breaks in and talks about music and events on campus. There is a tape Elliot made for the Springfield College Admissions Office presenting information to incoming students.

Other materials of interest are a heating coil to boil liquids that Baker used in his dorm room, materials on his Young Alumnus Award given in 1984, and materials, including photographs and scripts, for the Best of Broadway performances in 1973, 1974 & 1975. The Best of Broadway materials were kept in this series due to the overall tie to Eliott Baker, both in photographs and documents within the folders.
