Series 6 Scope and Contents

Materials within Series 6: Non-Springfield College Organizations include printed materials, photographs, lantern slides, and memorabilia produced by and about organizations other than Springfield College. Items are mainly tied to the YMCA, but there are some materials that have to do with Springfield Massachusetts and Massasoit Sachem or Ousamaquin who is often referred to as Chief Massasoit, including three lantern slides showing Massasoit Sachem and the signing of the peace treaty. There is also a lantern slide of YMCA founder, George Williams. The print materials include a manual prepared by Robert J. Roberts on the Boston YMCA (1887) and a World War I booklet written by George Stewart, Jr. titled “The Soldier’s Spirit”. Finally, there are a few items of memorabilia including a brass YMCA watch fob, a tie clip, and a felt mascot emblem for a jersey with Massasoit Sachem in the center that may have been used by the Springfield Indians in the mid-1900s. There are also some materials celebrating basketball and the Basketball Hall of Fame. Included is a program from the 1964 enshrinement game between the Boston Celtics and the New York Knickerbockers. Materials on Dr. James Naismith and the creation of basketball mostly involve anniversaries on the creation of the game, including materials on the commerative stamp in 1991 and a coin created for the 125th anniversary.
