History of the Collection

Materials in the Marianna Trekell Papers were originally donated to the AAHPERD Archives. The materials were donated by Marianna Trekell. The bulk of the materials were donated on August 21, 1993 (Accession 93/5). Many of these documents, including many reels of audio tapes of Oral History and books on Physical Education and Women and Girls in Sports. These materials were added to the Oral History Collection and Rare Book Collection. Additional materials were also donated in January 1994 (accession number 94/1). For exact information, see Accessions 1993 & 1994 in AAHPERD Archives materials.

Processing by the AAHPERD Archives was undertaken. The exact date of this processing is unknown. Finished finding aid is still missing, but MARC catalog record of the processed collection does exist. See OCLC record.

Processing Information

Processing by the AAHPERD Archives was undertaken. A collection number was assigned (“MC13) and materials were divided into two series, Print & Paper (1 & 2). In addition, boxes and folders were labelled and numbered and slides were grouped and numbered. This basic arrangement was maintained during final processing conducted in 2021, except it was decided that the collection would not be broken down into Series. Materials were simply arranged with the visual, glass slides and regular slides, first and the paper documents second.

Slides were kept in their original order. Spaces in preservation sleeves were left empty for slides that were missing numerically. Do not know if the slides are missing or whether they never existed.

Paper records were mostly kept together in the original order as found at time of 2021 processing. It is not known whether this was the original order that the materials came in at the time of donation or whether they were grouped together like this during the processing that took place by the AAHPERD Archives. At the time of the 2021 processing, some materials were removed from the original folders and foldered separately. These included materials from Gertrude E. Moulton dissertation and materials on Mabel Lee. This was done for ease of access by researchers.

Processing Note: Slides Group 1 thru 10

The groupings, numbering, and arrangement of these slides was done by the AAHPERD Archives. Identification of the slides was written on the outside casing of each slide. This identification included the collection number: MC13, the grouping number: 1-10, and the number of the slide. Each group was placed in their own box; though at the time of the 2021 processing some slides had fallen out of the boxes and were loose in the collection.

During 2021 processing, the AAHPERD groupings and numberings were maintained. Slides were simply removed from the boxes and put into sleeves. Starting at the top, they are arranged by number in rows from left to right. Numbers can be seen, mostly, from the backside of the sleeves; information on the casing of the slides being deemed more important to the researchers. Empty spaces were maintained, though it is not known if those slides are missing or were not included in the donation and were left as blank spaces in the original organization. No documentation on why the groupings were used or what the slides were used for is contained in the collection.
