Men's Historical Note

Harry McGuire was the first coach of the men’s soccer team in 1906. The team finished the first season with a record of 2 wins and 1 tie. Donald North and John Brock, each for 1 season, then coached the team. In 1909, George Affleck became the head coach where he remained for 16 seasons. The men’s soccer team accomplished many things under the leadership of Affleck, including being named New England Champions for the first time in 1921 and then again in 1925.

John D. Brock followed Affleck and coached the men’s team from 1929 until 1947. Under his leadership the team continued to win New England Championships, as well as 2 National Championships in 1931, 1937, 1946, and 1947. Following Brock was perhaps one of the most prominent coaches in men’s soccer history at Springfield College, as well as a former Springfield College student and athlete, Irvin Schmid. Schmid coached the team for 36 seasons from 1948 until 1962, took a season off, and returned to coach from 1964 until 1984. Under his leadership the team won New England Championships in 1953, 1957, and 1968; National Championship in 1957; and ECAC Regional Championships in 1976.

The team was then coached by another former Springfield College student and athlete Peter Haley. Haley coached the team for 27 seasons from 1985 until 2011. The team won the Northeast-8 Conference Championships in 1988 and 1989, as well as the ECAC Championships in 1989 and NEWMAC Championships in 1999 and 2011. Steffen Siebert took over the team in 2012 and continued the success at Springfield College by winning the ECAC Division III New England Championships.

Women's Historical Note

Women’s soccer first started at Springfield College as an intramural sport in 1957. Herb Zettl, professor of History, was asked to coach the college’s first Varsity Soccer team as it emerged from club status in 1980. Zettl coached the women until 1997, shortly before our current Coach, John Gibson took over in 2000. A native of London, England, Coach Gibson enters his 15th season as head women's soccer coach and associate professor of physical education at Springfield College in the fall of 2014. Gibson has led the Pride to the NCAA Tournament in six of the last eight years and has established the Pride as one of the top programs in the country. His clubs have registered an impressive a 165-75-21 record.

Gibson’s first trip to the NCAA’s at Springfield College was in 2005. That season the team tied a-then school record for wins (14-5-3). This included a school record-tying streak where the Pride won 10 consecutive matches, while also remaining unbeaten in 12 straight contests. For Springfield’s outstanding 2005 campaign, Gibson was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year and was also honored as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division III New England Regional Coach of the Year.

In 2007 Gibson's squad had one of the finest seasons in program history with a 16-3-1 record. The Pride earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Throughout the season, the Pride posted 14 shutouts, including 11 at home. In 2008 Springfield ranked as one of the top 25 teams in the country nearly the entire season, finishing with a 16-4-2 record. The team captured the NEWMAC Championship as the top-seed in the tournament and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as it served as hosts for the opening two rounds. Gibson honored as the NEWMAC Coach of the Year for the third time since he has taken over the helm of the program.

In 2010 Gibson led the team to another NCAA Championship. The Pride finished with a 15-5 record en route to its first ever NEWMAC regular season title and tournament championship in the same year. Gibson earned the NEWMAC Coach of the Year honor for the fourth time and was also tabbed the NEWISA Co-Coach of the Year as he coached Springfield's first All-America selection since 1992, Courtney Price. In 2011, the Pride had a 13-game unbeaten streak as the team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship for the fourth time under Gibson. Ranked as high as 14th in the country at point during the season, Springfield posted a 15-4-2 record. In 2012 women’s soccer captured the NEWMAC Championship in penalty kicks to advanced back to the NCAA Championship. Finally, in 2013, the Pride repeated as NEWMAC champions, however, they lost to Amherst in the first round of the NCAAs.
