Abstract Leslie J. Judd was born on August 6, 1888. Widely regarded as one of the founders of modern collegiate gymnastics, Judd graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelor’s in physical education (B.P.E.) in 1920. He was promptly hired by the college as a Professor of Physical Education and Head Gymnastics Coach, positions he held until he retired on April 1, 1955. Abstract Leslie Mann was born on November 18, 1893 in Lincoln, Nebraska. While attending Lincoln high school, Mann lettered and made All-state in three sports: basketball, baseball, and football. Collection Scope and Content This collection documents the Memorial Field House from the time it was the Naval Training Facility in Sampson, NY, when it was moved to Springfield College in 1947 and, finally, when it was decommissioned and demolished in 1979. Abstract Amos Alonzo Stagg, known as the “Grand Old Man of Football,” was born on August 16, 1862 in West Orange, New Jersey. In 1890, Stagg became a faculty member at the International YMCA Training School, now Springfield College, where he stayed until 1892. Abstract Edward S. Steitz was born on November 7th, 1920. After arriving at Springfield College in 1948, he was appointed as the head varsity basketball coach at Springfield College in 1956. His teams never had a losing season, and he ended with a 185-86 record. He served on the NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee from 1967 through his death in 1990.
