Biographical Note

Dorothy May Audette was the first woman to receive a degree from Springfield College as a full time undergraduate student, attending the school from 1934-1936. After she graduated high school in January of 1933, she attended American International College and took mainly history and english classes in the spring semester of 1934. Audette then transferred into Springfield College looking for a degree in social work and started her classes in the summer of 1934. She commuted to the college as she was a Springfield native. While on campus she acted as a counselor to freshman girls, was part of Tea and Topics, dramatics, the Jubilee Pageant, and debating. Audette received her B.S. in the Social Science Division in June of 1936. In October of 1936 Dorothy Audette was appointed Supervisor of Rural Projects in Hampden County for the National Youth Administration and stayed in that position until 1939. After this she attended Katherine Gibbs in Boston from 1939 to 1940 and after this she went to work for Pressprich Co. from 1940 to 1942. Following this continued her secretarial work at the American Bosch Corporation until January of 1942. In December of 1942 Audette started secretarial work at the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, MA until September of 1946. From 1946 to 1954 she worked at a Public Relations and Advertising business. Her final job was as a secretary at Combustion Engineering in Windsor, Connecticut from 1969 to 1979.
