Scrapbook 1 Scope and Contents

The contents of this scrapbook date from March 1903 to September 1908. They are, in general, arranged chronologically, although there are a few items that are undated or are not in order. This scrapbook includes articles about Gulick, about various jobs and positions he held, about the ideas and theories in his writings, about physical training and culture (in schools) and physical training for girls and women. There are also letters from John W Cook, FW Pearsall, unattributed articles (may be by Gulick or just about topics of interest to him), articles and letters to the editor by Gulick. Common topics and titles include: schools and sports/athletics, “St. Nicholas Fund” Volunteers (Christmas charity), books causing injury to students, “Final Report of the Athletic Committee of the Schoolmasters’ Association,” “The Alleged Effemination of our American Boys,” dancing, fads, gymnastics, “Chautauqua” summer school programs, “Team Games and Civic Loyalty,” “The Gang Principle in Civic Education” by William Chauncy Langdon, “Dr Luther Gulick on the Scientific Investigation of the Problems of the Home,” letter on Public Schools Athletic League letterhead to General George W Wingate, health, sanitary conditions, “The Bicycle as a Therapeutic Agent,” “Athletics for City Children,” “Health of School Children,” and “Exercise Must be Interesting.”
