Subseries 01a Scope and Contents

This sub-series contains the bulk of the material in series 1 and consists of correspondences and postcards both addressed to and from Laurence L. Doggett. Letters are mostly to and from Springfield College Alumni, though there are also letters that involve family and friends of the Alum. Letters concern camp work down by the YMCA both with the Allied Forces and the US Army, soldiers within the Allied Forces, including some descriptions of combat, training, and camp life, and letters regarding the death of alumni. Letters written by Doggett to the alumni describe events on campus, the YMCA, thoughts on war time education, and the future plans at Springfield College. There is a letter from Dr. James Naismith discussing the location of a possible reunion of Springfield men and the war work that is being done in France by the YMCA. Naismith also encloses a photo of himself which is not attached to the letter but could be the photograph that is held in the Scrapbook of photographs. Other prominent names represented in the letters include many letters from James Huff McCurdy, James S. Summers, and Ernest M. Best.

Processing Information

In 2019, folders in this collection were split up and put in new folders in preparation for digitizing all items in the collection. This was to make the documents easier to handle, number, and find as well as to ensure their preservation as they were digitized. Folders were split up so that only around 20 items were kept in each folder. Original folder numbers were kept with each additional folder given a letter designation starting with “a”. For example, after documents were split, folder 2 yielded folder 2, 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, and 2e. Increase in folders, also necessitated the creation of a box 1a due to increase of materials used in preservation.

Processing Information

A pamphlet titled “With the Expeditionary Forces in Egypt” published in 1915 has been moved to series 5, sub-series a) The Publications of the YMCA during World War One, 1915-1919.
