Subseries 02a Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

Sub-series a: Miscellaneous Materials contains published and unpublished manuscripts; correspondence, schedules, rosters, match results, scoring materials, and other official team documents; news releases, news articles, and newsletters that talk about happenings of the team; and posters, drawings, clothing, and other memorabilia that refers to/and were used by the Springfield College men’s gymnastics team. These materials and the information they contain go all the way back to the start of the program in 1904 and continue through the 2000s. The bulk of the material falls from 1960 through 2015.

Statistics and individual/team match scores or results make up the majority of materials within the collection. Most are copies or computer print outs, though there are some original scorer judge scorer sheets, in particular for 2007-2008. These include packets of scores for the gymnasts & teams who participated in major championship matches such as the EIGL (Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League), NCAA, USAG (USA Gymnastics), New England Championships, and ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference). Some folders contain additional information regarding schedules, manuals, and site information. There are some memorabilia such as stickers and posters. In addition, there are statistics from other dual matches such as the West Point Open and University of Massachusetts Open.

Also in the collections are materials that talk about the history of the Springfield College Gymnastics Team. This includes a thesis written in 1922 by Arthur F. Schaefer on the Springfield College Gymnastics Team and some letters and materials written by Coach Frank Wolcott in the later 2000s on team history. Among these materials are lists of venues where the team performed before the modern varsity team that began in the 1950s and lists of early gymnasts, captains, and match scores.

There are many newspaper articles, magazine articles, news releases, and manuscripts (published and unpublished) within the collection that talk about matches, recaps of the teams’ season, individual gymnasts, and/or gymnastics in general. This begins quite early in the collection and extends through the present day. Beginning in the 1960s these become more numerous. Some of the more unique materials include “Here Comes the Clowns” by Leslie J. Judd, Published in Scholastic Coach, “The Grace of Gymnastics” a magazine article about SC Gymnastics with photos by Martin Blumenthal, copies of the Men of Muscles article produced from January 23, 1939 Issue of LIFE Magazine (this is a smaller bound format of the photos & text), and Indian Clubs Part 1, that appear to be copies of pages of directions that may have been used for class. Also of note is a folder of newspaper articles on the Olympic Gymnast (1987 through 1991). One particular interesting groups of materials are newspaper articles from the International trip or trip to Mexico that the team takes in 1925. These include articles published in Mexican newspapers, some in Spanish.

Finally, there are some item of memorabilia and realia created by and on the Men’s team. This includes bumper stickers and envelopes from the seventies and early eighties from when the team used the name chiefs, drawings of Gymnasts, including Bob Cargill, by Jim Trelease, clothing from early gymnasts, particularly the 1940s and 1950s, tags and passes to various championships (from the time and belonging to Coach Posner), plaques, and envelope and golden stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gymnastics at the Olympics.
