This collection focuses on the professional life of Edgar Munroe Robinson (1867-1951). A 1901 graduate of Springfield College, Robinson was active in the establishment and development of the Boy Scouts of America, the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), and the High School YMCA (HI-Y) during the early twentieth century. Robinson also served as the Honorary Director of Boys Work Courses and the Advisor in Methods and Principles in Work with Boys at Springfield College from 1927-1937. ...

The School for Christian Workers (now Springfield College) was established in 1885 to train young men for various fields of Christian work open to laymen. The demand for qualified men in the rapidly expanding Young Men’s Christian Association movement was particularly pressing. Jacob T. Ted Shawn was born Edwin Myers Shawn on October 21, 1891 in Kansas City, Missouri. After a battle with Diphtheria at the age of 19, he took up dance as a form of Physical Therapy. In 1914 he met Ruth St. Denis, married her, and together they started the Denishawn Dance Company and School. Many of today’s modern dancers can trace their roots to this company.
