Subseries 01a Scope and Contents

From the Sub-Series:

This sub-series contains the bulk of the material in series 1 and consists of correspondences and postcards both addressed to and from Laurence L. Doggett. Letters are mostly to and from Springfield College Alumni, though there are also letters that involve family and friends of the Alum. Letters concern camp work down by the YMCA both with the Allied Forces and the US Army, soldiers within the Allied Forces, including some descriptions of combat, training, and camp life, and letters regarding the death of alumni. Letters written by Doggett to the alumni describe events on campus, the YMCA, thoughts on war time education, and the future plans at Springfield College. There is a letter from Dr. James Naismith discussing the location of a possible reunion of Springfield men and the war work that is being done in France by the YMCA. Naismith also encloses a photo of himself which is not attached to the letter but could be the photograph that is held in the Scrapbook of photographs. Other prominent names represented in the letters include many letters from James Huff McCurdy, James S. Summers, and Ernest M. Best.
